Learn to fly under power

Paramotoring lets you take off from a flat field and explore the countryside from the air. This course gives you everything you need to do that safely on your own: how the motor works, how to launch and land, how to handle the unexpected, and how to stay on the right side of airspace rules.

You don't need any flying experience. There's no separate Elementary Pilot course for paramotoring: you start from scratch and go straight to Club Pilot, with the ground skills built into the first days.

By the end you'll hold the BHPA Club Pilot rating for paramotoring. That means you can fly without an instructor, join a club, and get £5 million third-party insurance through BHPA membership. It's also your first step towards the Pilot rating, which lets you fly cross-country.

What you'll learn

• The motor and how to run it safely: engines, propellers, pre-flight checks and safe starting and stopping.
• Launching and landing: the launch position, inflations under power, aborting a launch and landing with confidence.
• Flying skills: using trimmers, flying circuits and practising engine-out landings so a motor failure never catches you out.
• Airspace and air law: reading air maps, NOTAMs, military zones near Yeovilton and how to plan a legal flight. See our UK air law guide.
• Weather: deciding for yourself when conditions are right to fly.

What the course looks like

Every course is different because it follows the weather and your progress, but a typical one runs like this:

1. Days 1 to 3Wing controlDay one can be your taster day. Ground handling and unpowered hops to build solid control of the wing. This is the foundation of safe paramotoring, and we come back to it throughout the course.
2. Day 4Meet the motorGet to know the paramotor and how it runs. You'll practise the launch posture, inflations with the engine running and how to abort a launch.
3. Days 5 and 6First flightsThe moment you've been waiting for. Short local circuits with lots of take-offs and landings.
4. Days 7 and 8Build confidenceMore flying and coaching, your first short cross-country flights, and exercises that prepare you for an engine failure in the air.
5. Final daysClub Pilot ratingFinish your flying tasks and the theory exam to earn your BHPA Club Pilot rating.

You get full access to our e-learning platform, with notes and interactive modules on paramotor theory, operation, airspace and safety. There are also how-to guides and weather resources, with new material added regularly, so it stays useful long after your course.
